US and Iranian representatives have traveled to Switzerland for face-to-face negotiations following the signing of a preliminary agreement last week aimed at ending the conflict.
The agreement outlines a goal of reaching a comprehensive settlement within 60 days, ending military actions across all areas—including Lebanon—and reopening the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic.
However, continued fighting between Israel and the Iran-supported Hezbollah group in Lebanon led Iran to announce on Saturday that it had closed the strategic waterway. Despite this declaration, shipping data indicates that vessels have continued to transit through the strait.
US Vice President JD Vance stated that Washington hopes to make progress on issues related to Iran’s nuclear program and the situation in Lebanon. Meanwhile, Iranian officials emphasized that they expect all parties to honor their obligations under the agreement.
Vance attended the talks at the Bürgenstock resort in Switzerland alongside Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, and special envoy Steve Witkoff.
The Iranian delegation, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, arrived in Switzerland on Saturday evening.
Also participating in the discussions were Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir.
Pakistan has played a mediating role throughout the conflict and previously hosted an earlier round of US-Iran negotiations.
